Hi, Suzanne Reilley here, business coach for personal trainers. I want to talk to you about having conversations with potential clients. I still teach a few clients and I was speaking with someone the other day. She really didn’t need my help. We had set up and consultation and she came to meet with me. She had been working out, she was doing strength training three times per week, she was in her 70’s, and her diet was fantastic. Her balance was great. She was getting cardiovascular activity. She felt great, she felt alert and she felt like herself. There was really nothing that I could help her with.
You may sometimes be thinking, “Oh my gosh, I need this client. I need this money. What is some way I can help this person?” If you offer them a service, you really miss a chance to commend them on things that they’re doing very well. You miss a chance to just sing their praise and really commend them for the great work they’re doing.
Twenty minutes into the hour I said, “You’re doing great. You’re doing really great. You’ve got me for the next 40 minutes if you have any questions – if I can help you in any way. My end prescription is, keep doing more of the same.”
She really opened up to me and said, “You’re right. I’m not the person who needs the help. It’s my husband. Would you come to our house? Can you help him? What can you do for him?” I stayed in that space of really helping her and being of service to her. I gave her my number and encouraged her to ensure that her husband really wanted that for himself, the way you want it for him. I need him to want to do the work!
She left saying that she would call. I would hear from her. She wants this help. She wants this for him. She left having fallen in love with me for not shoving some service down her throat that she didn’t need. So even if you need the cash, even if you’re really strapped, come from a place of service, come from a place of “How can I help this person?” Come from a place of feeling like you’re already earning $100,000 or $200,000 or 1M a year, and you’re there no matter what to help that person. It’ll make such a big difference.
Practice that, practice being in your center, practice being in your place of service, and see what happens. If you’d like to find out more, visit www.suzannereilley.com. Take care.
