Hi. Suzanne Reilley, business coach for personal trainers. You’ve escaped the 9 to 5. You’ve escaped office work, and instead, a lot of us have adopted the 5 to 9. The 5am to 9pm shift, which is going to burn you out really really really fast.

So what do I recommend? I recommend that you treat yourself like a doctor; like any other wellness professional would. And by that I mean that you want to decide on a couple things.

  1. Where you work. Which location are you at? Where can people find you?
  2. What are your hours of operation? When are you at your best? Do you want to work noon to 6? Do you want to work just the evenings? Do you love mornings and you want to work 5am to noon or 5a to 2pm? It’s really up to you. It’s just when you’re going to be at your best and what you’re going to enjoy.
  3. What do you charge? What are the various things you offer and how much do you charge for each of those things?
  4. Lastly, what policies do you have? Do you have a 24 hour cancellation policy? Do you have any other policies that people need to know about? You basically communicate these policies each time someone starts working with you and then enforce them if and when those situations come up.

That’s it! In the end, people are going to respect you so much more, they’re going to see that you know your worth and likely they’re going to come flocking to you, much much much more than if you’re driving all over town and chasing them and answering to their every whim and worry and desire and scheduling snafu.

So, put those things into place. Have those conversations and it’ll be so much better. Good luck to you!

  1. I fully agree with the last full paragraph (starting with “That’s it! In the end,…”), because a trainer in the beginning needs to look busy, while not being busy, and running around town, in my opinion is a waste of time in the long run. You will always be chasing the next client. Successful sales people, like trainers, are the ones who stay and wait in one place by fully knowing their surroundings and skills. Being patient in the right place is more valuable than passing by opportunity or just avoiding it. BE PATIENT AND PRODUCTIVE!!
