Hi, it’s Suzanne Reilley, business coach for personal trainers. People always ask, “How can I stand out when there are so many people around me doing the same exact thing?” That can mean so many trainers in the same club, so many trainers in the same city, so many trainers in the same studio. How can you stand out so people actually notice you?
The way to do that is to pick a really specific population who you work with. Some of you have heard this before and will sigh and think, “Uh, I hate when people tell me this. I’m trying to find clients and I don’t want to reduce the number of people I can market to. I don’t have enough clients right now, so how’s this going to help me?” One of my coaches made the analogy that if you have a brain tumor and you’re going to get it taken care of, you’re not going to go to a general practitioner who works on elbows and does some foot stuff and treats cold and flu, and they do some bursitis here and there. You want the guy who works on brain tumors, has done 1000 brain tumor surgeries that year, has written a book on brain tumors, and has a brain tumor certification. It’s the same thing with you. What specialty do you have?
Pick something you can relate to, perhaps something you’ve worked through yourself. Pick something you can really identify with. Maybe you help the ‘fat kids’ to not be the fat kid anymore as an adult. Perhaps you help moms who are stressed for time. Chose a specific group. Then phrase what you do in a way where you talk about what you do, who you help, and the benefits that those people get from working with you.
You may be familiar with my tagline. I teach personal trainers (that’s who I help) the marketing stuff they should have learned in school (that’s what I help them with). People who work with me learn to set their own schedule and make more money to live any lifestyle they choose. Those are the benefits that people get from working with me. Simply plug your info into this template.
So, pick your group, pick what you do, pick the benefits they get from working with you. Every time someone asks what you do, give them that short line. That will bring a picture to mind in their head of a specific person they know who might need your help. I cannot tell you the number of personal introductions I’ve gotten from mentioning that at the eye doctor, at the bank, at a party, at places where I wasn’t even thinking about marketing, but people were just curious about what I do.
That’s how you stand out. Craft your message. Share it. If you’d like to learn more about how to get your message out and how to market yourself properly, visit www.suzannereilley.com. Take care.
